Why an alarm did not sound

If a watch alarm did not sound, the most common cause is usually a device setting rather than the schedule itself. WatchKeeper depends on local notifications and the active saved schedule, so it is worth checking both the app setup and the iPhone’s notification behavior.

First, confirm that notifications are allowed for WatchKeeper in iPhone Settings. If notification permission was denied, alarms may never appear. After that, check whether alerts are being silenced by Focus mode, muted notification settings, low volume, or another device-level restriction. An alarm may be scheduled correctly but still not be noticeable if the phone is suppressing alerts.

Next, review the schedule itself. Make sure a watch plan is active, the start time is correct, and the expected handoff has not already been changed by a delay, pause, swap, or other override. In a sliding watch system, alarm times may move when the schedule shifts. In a fixed watch system, alarms stay tied to the planned watch times. If the crew expected one behavior but the schedule was configured for the other, the alarm may seem late, early, or missing.

It is also possible that the alarm was acknowledged, dismissed, or missed earlier than expected during testing or a previous handoff. Reviewing the current watch and next watch time can help confirm whether the app still considers that alert upcoming.

Things to Check

  • Notification permission is enabled for WatchKeeper.
  • Sound, alert style, and volume are turned on.
  • Focus or Do Not Disturb is not suppressing alerts.
  • The watch schedule is active and the start time is correct.
  • No delay, pause, or swap changed the expected alarm time.
  • The crew understands whether the schedule is fixed or sliding.

The best way to avoid alarm surprises is to test one before departure. If the device settings, notification permissions, and schedule timing all match what the crew expects, alarms are much more reliable underway.
