iPhone notification behavior

WatchKeeper uses iPhone notifications to alert the crew about upcoming watches, handoffs, and schedule-related reminders. These notifications depend on both the active watch schedule and the iPhone’s own notification settings, so the way an alert appears can vary based on how the device is configured at that moment.

When notifications are enabled, an alert may appear on the Lock Screen, as a banner, as a sound, or in Notification Center, depending on your iPhone settings. If the phone is unlocked and in use, the alert may appear differently than it does when the phone is locked. This is normal iPhone behavior and can affect how noticeable a watch reminder feels in practice.

Focus modes, sound settings, and notification preferences can all change the result. A reminder may still be scheduled correctly in WatchKeeper but feel silent or easy to miss if the iPhone is suppressing banners, muting sounds, or limiting alerts. That is why it is important to test notifications with the same device settings you expect to use during the trip.

WatchKeeper also follows the schedule you have configured. In a fixed watch system, alerts stay tied to planned watch times. In a sliding watch system, alerts may move with the schedule if earlier watches are delayed. If the alert appeared at an unexpected time, it is worth checking both the notification settings and the current schedule state.

What to Expect

  • Alerts may appear on the Lock Screen, as banners, or in Notification Center.
  • Notifications can look different when the iPhone is locked versus in use.
  • Sound and visibility depend on iPhone settings, not just the app.

What to Check

  • Notifications are allowed for WatchKeeper.
  • Alert style and sounds are enabled the way your crew expects.
  • Focus mode is not suppressing important reminders.
  • The active schedule and watch timing are correct.
  • The crew understands whether alarms follow fixed or sliding timing.

The best way to avoid surprises is to test a watch alarm before departure under real conditions. If the notification appears clearly and at the expected time, the crew can rely on it more confidently underway.
