Assigning crew members
To assign crew members, start with a saved crew and open your watch schedule. As you build or edit the schedule, choose the person assigned to each watch period in the order the rotation will happen. Keep the assignments consistent with how your crew actually operates onboard. The clearest schedule is usually the best one, especially when people are tired or checking the app in low light.
When making assignments, think beyond fairness on paper and focus on practical use. Make sure the rotation is easy to understand at a glance and realistic for the people involved. If your crew uses a repeating pattern, assign members in that exact sequence so the schedule is simple to confirm later. If someone is not available for normal duty, it is better to reflect that clearly rather than forcing them into the standard rotation.
Before saving, review the full sequence of assignments. Check that each watch has the right person, that the order matches your intended handoffs, and that no one has been skipped or added by mistake. Accurate assignments matter because WatchKeeper uses them as part of the base schedule that later supports swaps, pauses, delays, and restart recovery.
Best Practices
- Assign crew members in the real order the watches occur.
- Use a simple rotation the whole crew can understand quickly.
- Double-check each watch before saving.
- Avoid building a schedule around ideal conditions that may not hold underway.
Good assignments should make the schedule feel obvious. When someone opens WatchKeeper, they should be able to tell immediately who is on watch now, who is next, and how the rotation continues.
